Welcome! I’m Trish, dietitian, healthy living blogger and the voice behind Dish by Trish.

I’m a New Jersey transplant currently living in beautiful San Francisco. To help you get to know me, I put together some answers to questions I frequently get asked.

How did you get into food and nutrition? 

I see nutrition as a coming together of my love for food and respect for the body.

My earliest memories are centered around food: the distinct smell of my grandma’s house that took on the sautéed garlic and basil she added to her famous marinara; waking up to the sizzling sound of red-skinned potatoes frying on Sunday morning as my dad prepared our hearty Irish breakfast; serving ice cream sundaes on hot summer days at my Aunt’s restaurant on the Jersey Shore. My grandma, who was a big influencer for me, was born during the Great Depression on the outskirts of New York City. One of the lessons she learned, and passed on to me, was how to cook a healthy meal on a limited budget without compromising taste. There is no doubt in my mind that food is one of life’s greatest pleasures. It is something to be shared, something to be celebrated.

After years of not taking care of my body, however, my physical health finally paid the price. At twenty four, I found myself sick, overweight and overstressed. I felt out of balance and out of touch. I eventually came to realize a healthy body is truly a gift and our bodies must be nourished and cared for. I used good nutrition as a vehicle to transform my physical health and I felt like a new woman. I wanted to share this with others. This personal transformation was really the catalyst for choosing nutrition as my new career.

What is your philosophy on food?

My philosophy on food essentially boils down to two things: fresh and simple. I like to use real foods from ingredients that are minimally processed. Having a great affection for nature and for optimal nutrition, I like to use seasonal, locally grown foods that are as fresh as possible. With high quality ingredients, you can’t go wrong and they speak for themselves which helps keep meals simple.

What do you do when you’re not blogging or health coaching?

Hmm… I can usually be found walking along the San Francisco Bay or playing on a USTA tennis league. I’m also a big fan of hiking around the San Francisco Bay Area, road tripping, boxing and exploring San Francisco on my red Buddy scooter named Lady.
